breaking of bread
The Lord Jesus Christ, before his death on the cross, gathered his disciples into an upper room. “As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and break it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all of it; for this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many, for the remission of sins.” Matthew 26:26 – 28

The bread and the cup are symbols used by the Lord Jesus to remind his disciples of what He would soon accomplish for them on the cross of Calvary.

The bread speaks of the body of Christ which was given for us. Jesus Christ says in the Bible“…Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me.” Hebrews 10:5
​
The greatest marvel is that immortal God clothed himself with mortality to come into the world to die on the cross for you and me. While in that human body Jesus Christ paid the debt for your sins and mine. “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree,” 1 Peter 2:24
​
The cup of wine speaks of His blood that was shed for us. The Bible clearly teaches that there is a price that must be paid for sins. "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
​
Our sins warrant death and there is not a thing we can do to pay for them ourselves.
Yet God in his divine mercy has provided us with a substitute, His Son the Lord Jesus Christ. His blood represents his life given as a sacrifice to God on our behalf. Jesus says, “My blood… is shed for many, for the remission of sins.” Matthew 26:28 His blood shed means that the price of our Salvation is “paid in full.”

We read that after Christ’s resurrection, his disciples would gather on the first day of every week to “Remember” the Lord. “And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread.” Acts 20:7 “And they continued steadfastly in the apostle’s doctrine and in fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” Acts 2:42

According to scripture the “Breaking of Bread” is also called "The Lord’s Supper.” The Lord Jesus Christ instituted this feast with his disciples in the upper room, so that they would “Remember Him”.

Paul, who is the writer of many books in the New Testament, tells us “For as often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup, ye do proclaim the Lord’s Death until He come.” 1 Corinthians 11:26
​
We as Christians, disciples, and believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, love to remember the Lord each Sunday in the way he instructed us to. The Bread and Cup remind us of what it cost our Saviour to procure our Salvation on Calvary’s cross
